If there was ever a spot to schedule your next weekend getaway with your junkin’ buddies, this is it!
There are over 20 vintage, repurposed, salvaged materials, hand-crafted shops in Kansas City’s West Bottoms, which is an up-and-coming area with trendy new green spaces and loft apartment living. An industrial area that was flooded out in the early 1950s, the West Bottoms is west of KC’s downtown and power/light districts, where Hyvee (Kemper) Arena and the old stockyards are located right before your cross over the state line into Kansas.
A majority of the shops down in the bottoms are open every Friday through Sunday, but 5 or 6 are only open on the first Friday and Saturday of the month, lending that weekend special status in the bottoms. Food trucks, cocktail stands, live music and street vendors come into the neighborhood on those weekends, and it’s a really fun atmosphere with GREAT JUNKIN!
I rent a space on the 4th floor at Martin’s Memories, 1400 W 12th St, KC MO. The 4th floor is predominantly salvaged materials and I have a lot of windows, barn wood, metal art items and other junk in my space there on 4. The building has an antique freight elevator; it wouldn’t be a good trip to the bottoms if you haven’t ridden up to 4 on the elevator at Martin’s and taken the stairs down in a leisurely trip through 4 floors of organized vintage mercantile. You’ve never been in a shop like it, I promise!
